Russell Arts Council Summer Concert Series

Russell Arts Council LogoThis summer, the Russell Arts Council is presenting a classical music concert series for the Russell community and surrounding areas.

There will be five concerts in total throughout the summer and each will be made up of Russell musicians, past and present. The concerts will be performed at different churches in town in an effort to show off their beauty both architecturally and acoustically.

The opening concert of the series will be Sunday, July 6 at 3 PM. It will be a program of Renaissance and 21st century music with a 20-voice chamber choir. This concert will also premiere a piece of music composed, for the opening of the series, by Russell-native and new USD 407 Vocal Music teacher, Michael Davidson.

Concert two will be a solo recital featuring Davidson himself on Sunday, July 13. Davidson is an accomplished operatic tenor, having sung major roles in operas at Loyola University in New Orleans where he completed a Bachelors of Music degree and at the University of Kansas where he completed a Masters of Music degree in Vocal Performance.

The third concert will be an educational program featuring a choir of Russell High School students with the four young artists as soloists. The music will be a Bach Cantata and a Baroque Oratorio: Carissimi's Jephte. This will be on Sunday, July 20 at 3 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Concert four will be Friday, July 25 at 7:30 PM. It is a Friday evening performance with music including Brahms Quartets and solo voice literature performed by the four young artists of the series.

The fifth and final concert of the series will be performed twice in one weekend. There will be an evening performance in Hays on Saturday, August 2 at 7:30 PM and a Sunday afternoon performance in Russell on August 3 at 3 PM at St. John Lutheran Church. This will be a concert featuring Mozart's Requiem with a community choir, soloists and orchestra.

Alex Underwood will be returning for the summer from Westminster Choir College, where he has received his Masters in Choral Conducting, to produce the series. Leann Hillmer will be the collaborative pianist for the series and Victoria Ptacek is the series manager. The Young Artists for the program are Fort Hays State University graduate and Russell native, Calder Craig, FHSU graduate, Karl Pratt, current FHSU student, Hayley Funk and current Kansas State University student, Rachel Hunt.

Tickets for the summer may be purchased at the Russell Area Chamber of Commerce beginning June 1. Each concert is $10, or $35 for all five performances.
