Sunflower Visual Arts Festival in Lucas is Sept. 30

2017 Sunflower Visual Arts FestivalThe 2017 Sunflower Visual Arts Festival (SVAF) will be held Saturday, September 30 from 10 AM to 5 PM in downtown Lucas.

The SVAF was established in Lucas in 2013 as an annual event celebrating the seven recognized fields of Visual Arts – Visionary/Outsider Art, Grassroots Art, The Fine Arts, Moving Images, 3D Imagery, The Printed Word and Photography. The SVAF is the official State Visual Arts Festival, as designated by governor's proclamation in 2013.

This year the featured visual art at the SVAF will once again be Moving Images. The importance of Moving Images to the human psyche throughout history cannot be understated. Moving Images have been used to entertain, to inform and educate, and to influence how we choose to live our lives.

The Festival kicks off at 10 AM with the SVAF welcome and unveiling of the 2017 Inductees into the Kansas Movie Hall of Fame and the Kansas Thespian Hall of Fame in the rear of the Lucas Area Community Theater at 116 South Main Street. Exhibit closes at 2:30 PM. The finalists for both Halls are listed on the Festival website.

The exhibit closes at 2:30 PM. The deadline for entry in this juried show is noon on Wednesday, September 27. Entry forms and rules can be found on the Festival's website at

At 11 AM the Lucas Rural Fire Department Benefit Barbecue will be held in the rear of the Lucas Area Community Theater. Featuring hamburgers, hot dogs and brats. All proceeds go to the Lucas Rural Volunteer Fire Department and the Sunflower Visual Arts Festival.

From 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM there will be a Basic Photography Workshop with area photographer Ian Shaw held at the Lucas Civic Centre, located on the SW corner of Second and Main Streets in downtown Lucas.
