Post Rock Limestone Workshop is Oct. 13, 14 in Lucas

Jon PancostHave you wanted to know more about the post rock limestone in north central Kansas? Now is your chance to learn from experts about the culture, history, geology and architecture of this unique layer of Kansas limestone named for the stone fence posts settlers erected due to the lack of trees on the plains.

As part of an ongoing effort to celebrate and renew interest in this post rock limestone, the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas is hosting a two-day hand's-on workshop Friday and Saturday, October 13 and 14.

Participants will cut block, lay a stone wall - including a decorative motif piece - and learn historic mortar techniques, all while working alongside professional stone craftsman Jon Pancost and his crew from Bluestem Quarry and Stone Works in Lucas. There will be presentations on the geology of the post rock layer, and an overview of the historic and architectural uses adopted by settlers and ranchers of the region.

Registration for the workshop will include two days of hand's-on activities, lunches, a stone quarry tour, and architecture and history discussion sessions. Friday evening will be spent with a guest geologist and local artists who photograph and carve the stone.

The cost of the two-day workshop is $200, which includes lunch and tools. Registration is limited, so sign up early. Tools will be furnished, but participants should bring gloves, safety glasses and wear covered-toe shoes.

For more information and a registration packet, contact the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas at 785-525-6118 or [email protected] You can also register at: using the "donate" tab.

This workshop is sponsored by the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas, and grants from the Russell County Area Community Foundation and the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
