Blizzard Hits Russell County

11-25-18 BlizzardA significant winter storm on Sunday brought blizzard conditions to Russell County and many parts of Kansas.

Snow and blowing snow closed several roads in the area, including Interstate 70. All roads in Russell County have since re-opened, but many remain slick and snowpacked.

The highest recorded wind gust during the storm was 58 mph Sunday morning at the Russell Municipal Airport according to the National Weather Service.

It's estimated Russell received three inches of snow, but the wind caused drifts much larger than that. Some reports indicate Hoisington received six inches of snow. Areas of north central and northeast Kansas received even more.

The City of Russell and much of Russell County were without electricity for several hours Sunday due to snow and ice sticking to power lines and the lines slapping together in the wind. The City of Russell power grid also experienced a few broken power poles according to city officials.

Several other power outages were reported across the state as well.
