Section of K-18 Remains One Lane Due to Soil Erosion

Road UpdateThe westbound lane of a section of Kansas Highway 18 between Paradise and the west US Highway 281 junction in Russell County remains closed due to soil erosion on the north side of the road and a repair timetable is still unknown.

The highway has been reduced to one lane for the past couple months and traffic control devices are in use.

According to Kansas Department of Transportation Engineer Harold Schleicher, the large amount of moisture the area has experienced this year combined with the type of soil under the highway have caused the damage.

Schleicher said the highway was built in the 1930s with some additional work in the 1960s. He said it's a possibility some of the soil used in the original construction was subpar.

Geologists have surveyed the area, but it's unknown how extensive the repair will be or when it will begin.

Schleicher said the eastbound lane in the area is safe and the highway will remain one lane until repairs are made.
