Future of USD 112's Central Plains Middle School to be Decided at Special Meeting

Central Plains Middle SchoolThe Central Plains USD 112 Board of Education voted April 30 during a special meeting at Central Plains Elementary School in Holyrood to proceed with a resolution to hold a public meeting at 6 PM on Tuesday, May 21 at CPES on whether to close Central Plains Middle School in Bushton.

The closing would take place beginning with the 2019-2020 school year and beyond according to the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter. Those students would be reassigned to CPES and Central Plains High School in Claflin.

At the end of the public hearing, the board will vote on whether to formally adopt the resolution and close CPMS.

The USD 112 Board of Education has been discussing budget concerns throughout the last several months. At one point, the option to close Wilson High School was on the table. Wilson is part of the Central Plains district.

USD 112 Superintendent Greg Clark told KRSL News the option to close Wilson High School was only considered early on in the process and when talking about budget cuts, the viability of all buildings in a district is considered, but closing Wilson was never at the top of the list. He said there are enough students at Wilson to leave it open, however, it's getting harder to justify having three buildings - Central Plains Elementary, Middle and High Schools - open in the southern part of the district.
