Wheat Stubble Fire Threatens Homes, KRSL Radio Studios

KRSL Wheat Field Fire 7-4-19 1City of Russell and Russell Grant Firefighters responded to a wheat stubble fire Thursday afternoon in Russell that was caused by fireworks.

According to dispatch logs, at 2:22 PM Thursday, Russell Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a wheat field on fire in the city limits near 1750 North Maple Street.

Firefighters, Russell County EMS, the Russell Police Department, the Russell County Sheriff's Office and Russell County Emergency Management responded.

The fire burned quickly and moved northwest fueled by a southeast wind.

The fire was extinguished near a group of trees on the edge of the north city limits.KRSL Wheat Field Fire 7-4-19 2

The fire threatened a few homes in the area, as well as the KRSL Russell Radio studios and property, but no structures were damaged.

The blaze was caused by fireworks according to City of Russell Fire Chief Dylan Riedel.

No injuries were reported.

There were a few other fires reported Thursday night in Russell County due to fireworks.

According to dispatch logs, there was a grass fire at Volente Point at Wilson Lake, there was a trash can fire in the 400 block of East 4th Street in Russell and there was a firework debris fire in Lucas. All were extinguished with no injuries.
