Operation Christmas Child Collects More Than 2,000 Shoe Box Gifts

Operation Christmas ChildThe local Operation Christmas Child effort in Russell surpassed its goal this year and collected 2,058 shoe box gifts to send to less fortunate kids around the world.

The goal was to collect 2,000 boxes. 1,989 boxes were collected in 2018.

The boxes, filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items, will be delivered to children who are living in the midst of poverty, war, disease or natural disaster.

According to longtime local Operation Christmas Child volunteer Alice Hammack of Russell, 1,846 shoe boxes were collected in 2017 and 1,554 were collected in 2016. The program has seen exponential growth in recent years and Hammack thanks the Russell community and Russell County for its support.

After collection in Russell at Otterbein United Methodist Church, the boxes are trucked to Salina and then to the Denver, Colorado Processing Center, which is one of eight centers in the US.

Hammack said the organization will host a soup supper on Tuesday, December 10 beginning at 4 PM at the Russell High School cafeteria in conjunction with the Amos Morris Classic basketball tournament. Funds raised from the soup supper will go toward shipping costs for the boxes.

Operation Christmas Child is a program of Samaritan's Purse, a non-denominational Christian organization led by Franklin Graham.
