USD 407 BOE Approves Project to Upgrade Electrical System at Simpson Elementary School

USD 407 BOE Special Meeting 7-27-20The Russell County USD 407 Board of Education met Monday and approved a project to upgrade the electrical system at Simpson Elementary School.

Superintendent Shelly Swayne explains they discovered an infrastructural issue with electrical at Simpson they could not operate under.

Eric Cline with ESC Electric was contacted to investigate.

On Monday, the Board approved a bid from RDH Electric and Construction of Hays to replace that main panel, upgrade the system and add breakers. The project will cost between $56,000 and $65,000 depending on how long the installation takes and if it's during business hours.

Also Monday, the Board discussed prioritizing upgrades at Ruppenthal Middle School, with the electrical system at the top of the list.

Agreements between USD 407 and the Masonic Lodge and the Russell County Historical Society were also discussed and reviewed. For social distancing requirements, USD 407 is using the Masonic Lodge to house fifth grade and the Scout House owned by the Historical Society for Russell High School classes.

Enrollment was also discussed. Swayne said enrollment is down about five percent. Increased home schooling because of COVID-19 is believed to be the main reason.

The Board, Swayne and the other administrators also thanked the community for the recent donations of masks, school supplies, yard signs, money and other items.
