"Two Ways Out" the Theme of Fire Prevention Month

Russell City Fire DepartmentFirefighters this month are urging folks to have two ways out of their homes in case of an emergency.

Russell City Fire Chief Sam Schmidt says the effort is a part of October being national Fire Prevention Month.

"It's surprising how many homes that we go into and we find that the second exit or the back door may be blocked," said Schmidt. "They could have furniture or a washing machine - appliances of any kind - sitting in front of that back door, basically making it unusable."

Schmidt said to make an escape plan utilizing two or more exits and practice that plan with your family to better understand what needs to be done in the event of a fire.

He also said this is a great time to check your smoke detector batteries to assure they are still functioning.
