Dean Banker greets Arlyn Specter with Bob DoleRussell High School graduate and former Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter died Sunday from complications of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, according to a statement released by his family.

Specter was 82 and was first diagnosed with the disease in 2005. His funeral will be Tuesday, October 16 in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania followed by burial in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania.

He graduated from RHS in 1947 after being born in Wichita and growing up in Wichita and Russell. After his high school graduation, Specter moved on to college at the University of Oklahoma and then to the University of Pennsylvania. He then resided in Pennsylvania for the remainder of his life, serving in the United States Senate for more than three decades.

In the above picture, Specter (standing) is pictured shaking the late Dean Banker's hand at the Dole-Specter Conference Center in Russell during the 2011 Prairiesta festivities. Russell native and former Senator Bob Dole is also pictured in the background.

Dole and Specter served on the Senate together for many years, making Russell during that time the only city in the country to have two sitting senators.

Specter's sister-in-law, Joyce Specter, still lives in Russell.
