Electrical System Facing Upgrade Deadline

The mandatory upgrades are because of an EPA emissions compliance standard entitled RICE NESHAP, which stands for Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants.
According to Electric Utilities Director Duane Banks, to move forward, the Russell City Council currently has two options to upgrade the out-of-date system; repair and refurbish current equipment or buy new generation.
"Unfortunately for the council, they're in a position where they're going to have to make a decision rather soon," Banks said. "It's being forced on them by the EPA. We've got a compliance date of May of 2013, so we don't have a lot of time."
The topic will most likely be discussed the next time the council meets, which will be Tuesday, November 6 for a work study session.Read More Local News
