Winter Weather Awareness Day is Wednesday

Cold WeatherThe National Weather Service has announced Wednesday, November 14 as Winter Weather Awareness Day for the state of Kansas.

During this time, NWS and American Red Cross officials remind folks to winterize vehicles and homes, as well as service heating equipment such as furnaces and chimneys.

Also, preparation of a supply kit to have during emergencies is paramount at this time of the year. Officials say to include many of the items in a winter kit that you would include in any emergency kit - water, food, flashlight, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, etc. - but also include items that would keep a person warm and safe for an extended period of time. Suggestions of items include warm clothing and blankets; sand, rock salt or kitty litter to make walkways and steps less slippery; and ample alternate heating methods such as fireplaces or wood- or coal-burning stoves.

For any more tips or information, contact the National Weather Service or the American Red Cross.
