Superintendent Dave Couch says increased costs for the project made the board leery of making any decisions yet.
"We had a local estimate, but after having an architect come through and talk about different venting, ducting and electrical, we found out the cost we were thinking it might be is pretty much double," said Couch. "His estimate was around $125,000 and that's not for architectural fees or anything else; that's just for once you start the project, a projected cost."
The board will readdress the issue after they discuss facilities planning at their meeting on December 10.
Also discussed at Monday's meeting was an information item presented by Athletic Director Mark Paul about the projected large number of upcoming coaching vacancies the district is looking at. Paul said he has confirmed that eight coaches in the high school and middle school won't be coming back next year, and he has heard from a total of 20 coaches - including the eight previously stated - at both schools that may be stepping down.
Board President Jerry Brown says it may just be time to reduce coaching positions and sports programs at USD 407 schools.
"It's probably very much a sign of the times and probably something we as a board need to look at each sport individually, and say of these sports, what do we keep and maybe what do we not," Brown said. "With rising costs, transportation, coaching positions and student participation - right now we average less than 35 percent of our student population participating in extra curricular activities. Maybe we can't provide these anymore."
A report on the district's ACT scores from the previous year, preliminary presentation of the 2013-2014 district calendar, and an hour-long executive session for personnel matters with no action being taken were other items addressed at Monday's meeting as well.
