Summer Food Program Feeds Kids for Free

Summer Lunch ProgramWith summer right around the corner, it's time to think about keeping children eating healthy while school is out and USD 407 will be providing free meals to children this summer to do just that.

This summer, meals will be served at Ruppenthal Middle School Monday through Friday from June 3 through June 28 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. There are no income requirements or registration and any child under age 18 may come to eat.

According to USD 407 Food Service Director Leasha Jones, volunteers are needed throughout the month of June to help serve meals, supervise children and do outreach in the community.

Each year, the US Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like USD 407 to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer.

This is the first year the program will be held in Russell, and expansion of the serving of meals throughout all of summer may take place in the coming years depending on the success of the program, according to organizers.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Jones at USD 407 at 785-483-2173.
