Russell Mayor Curt Mader signed a proclamation on May 21 naming the week of May 27 through June 2 "Relay for Life Days" in Russell to encourage participation in the 2013 Russell County Relay for Life event on June 1 at Russell High School.
According to Relay Publicity Chairman Damian Morgenstern, purple ribbons commemorating the week will be placed around town and also a giant purple ribbon will be painted at 8th and Main. The group is also asking businesses to paint a ribbon on their store windows. Morgenstern says it's all a part of an effort to show community support for those that currently battle and have battled cancer.
Through the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life celebrates cancer survivors and caregivers, remembers loved ones lost to the disease, and empowers individuals and communities to fight back against cancer. According to the signed proclamation, Relay for Life of America helped fund more than $150 million in cancer research last year.
