Electric Department Projects Continue, Near Completion

powerRussell Electric Utilities Director Duane Banks and his crews have been busy the past few months improving the city's power grid, and while much of their work still continues, some of it is nearing completion.

Banks says he is optimistically looking at a completion date sometime in October for the updated 34.5 kV power loop around Russell. He explains the loop's significance to Russell's power grid and says it will increase reliability and also make maintenance performance easier.

Currently crews are setting poles for the line in downtown Russell near the power plant and will work their way west along 9th Street eventually making it to the outskirts of town and then continuing the loop to the south, then the east, and so on.

Another project, the overhaul of city generator unit number seven, is about two weeks from completion according to Banks. The overhaul, which was approved by the Russell City Council several months ago, just as the installation of the 34.5 loop was as well, is an upgrade that Banks says was necessary to do as soon as possible to avert a catastrophic failure. He says this particular engine was installed in the early 1970's.
