Russell Man Arrested After Standoff

940 E 7th Police Standoff 9-9-13A Russell man is in custody after a Sunday night standoff that lasted more than eight hours.

According to a press release from Russell County Sheriff John Fletcher, 28-year-old Clayton Becker barricaded himself inside a home in the 900 block of East 7th Street on Sunday evening.

Becker, who was wanted on several felony warrants, had been "threatening to shoot it out with law enforcement or kill himself."

After several hours of trying to get him to surrender, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation went into the house and found Becker hiding under the basement stairs. He was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Becker was treated by the Russell County EMS and then transported to the Russell County Jail.

The KBI High Risk Warrent Team, Russell County Sheriff Special Operations Group. Russell Police Department, Russell City Fire Department, Hays Police Department Special Response Team and Russell County Emergency Management all responded to the scene.

The standoff began around 5pm on Sunday and ended at 1:30am on Monday.
