A recent press release from Russell County Sheriff John Fletcher says at 2:45 PM January 11, deputies from the Sheriff's Office were advised of two vehicles driving recklessly on I-70 eastbound from the Hays area. The vehicles were a white Toyota pickup and a grey Volkswagen Jetta passenger car both with Pennsylvania plates.
The vehicles were driving side-by-side and blocking traffic. Also, the subjects were reported to be passing items between the vehicles. The pickup attempted to run the reporting party off the road.
Deputies stopped the vehicles at the 183 milepost near Russell where a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper joined the stop.
During the traffic stop, a significant amount of marijuana was located in the pickup.
The driver and passenger of the pickup, John Thompson and Scott Hunsberger of Pennsylvania, were arrested and the pickup was seized along with the drugs. The driver of the Jetta, Robert Hunter III of Pennsylvania, was cited for reckless driving and allowed to continue on home.
Thompson and Hunsberger were arrested for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, reckless driving and minors in possession.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the subjects had purchased the marijuana in Colorado and were traveling back home to Pennsylvania.Read More Local News
