Half-Cent Sales Tax Renewal to be on Spring Election Ballot

A half-cent sales tax that has been in place for 10 years and funds Russell County economic development projects is up for renewal this year, and Russell County Commissioners said Monday the tax is a good thing to keep going.
The tax, which was originally voted on and approved back in 2003, will be placed on the April 1, 2014 election ballot in Russell County following the Commissioners' recent approval to add the renewal to the ballot.
Commissioner Alan Kuntzsch says originally Russell County Economic Development was funded by levied tax dollars, but once the half-cent sales tax was passed, funding for the program has been through the sales tax.
According to Eco Devo Executive Director Janae Talbott, each city can spend that money on their own local economic development programs, incentives and efforts. For Russell County, the tax funds the Eco Devo Department, incentives and capital improvements.
Other business discussed at Monday's Commissioners meeting included annual county reorganization with no major changes and the accepting of bids to sell two surplus fire trucks from the Dorrance Fire Department.
