Business Container Garden Challenge Winners Announced

Russell County Economic Development and CVBRussell County Economic Development and Convention and Visitors Bureau have announced the winners of the first ever Russell County Business Container Garden Challenge.

This challenge is part of an effort to create awareness and education of value added agriculture that fits into our existing agribusiness industry.

Participants had to grow produce or a crop in a container or border of their business. Along with their entry form, they also had to provide before and after pictures.

An independent committee reviewed the challengers and have selected the 2017 winners.

Tangerine Tumbleweed of Lucas is the grand champion, and reserve champion went to Gudenkauf and Malone of downtown Russell and Possumbilities of downtown Lucas.

The grand prize is a $50 gift certificate and reserve grand prize is a $25 gift certificate to Marvin's Gardens of Russell so the winners can add a taste of fall to their storefronts.

If you'd like to learn more about value added agriculture and how you can add value to the ag industry, contact the Eco Devo and CVB office at 785-483-4000 or [email protected]

Their next learning event, Farm Talk, will be on Tuesday, September 12 at 7 PM at the Dream Theater in Russell. Jeff Ochampaugh of Agrilead Inc. will be the guest speaker with the topic of "Recognize Globally – Respond Locally".

This presentation takes a look at productivity of American agriculture over the past 40 years and how this and other current issues of commodity supply and demand in the global markets mean we must locally consider new ways to manage our family farms and small ag business operations.

The program is free and open to the public. Please RSVP by September 8 by calling 785-483-4000.
