Russell City Council 1-2-18The Russell City Council met Tuesday afternoon for its monthly work study and discussed downtown revitalization, electric code updates and repairs at the city's main power plant.

In recent months, Russell City Clerk Katrina Woelk and Russell Main Street, Inc. Executive Director Krista Whitmer have been working together to research ways to revitalize the downtown district and hire an outside company to design a new streetscape.

She requested Tuesday the Council allow her and Whitmer to apply for grant funding to hire a design company. The Council will consider that at its February 20 meeting.

Also Tuesday, Building Official Roger Sells presented a proposal to update the city's electric code this year. Currently, the city is using the 2002 code and Sells wants to update to the 2014 code.

Sells explains one of the main changes will be the requirements regarding arc fault circuit interrupters, which are breakers that break the circuit when they detect an electric arc in the circuit.

Local electrician Darrell Ryan spoke.

Also Tuesday, City Electric Utilities Director Duane Banks presented a proposal to refurbish the main power plant cooling towers.

In other business, the Council discussed possibly giving money toward a project to paint a mural on the VFW building and a community clean-up day scheduled for April.
