USD 407 Provides Information Regarding Widespread Illness

Russell Champion MascottDue to extreme student and staff illness, Russell County USD 407 will not be in session on Friday, February 9. There will be no evening or weekend activities.

According to USD 407, as of Thursday, February 8 at 2:30 PM the following percentage of student absences due to illness by building were reported:

  • Simpson Elementary - 32%
  • Bickerdyke Elementary - 23%
  • Ruppenthal Middle - 19%
  • Russell High - 8%
  • District - 20.5%

The following activities for February 9-12 have been postponed or canceled:

February 9

  • Basketball at RHS vs. Beloit – moved to February 19
  • SNAP Soup Supper – moved to February 19
  • Winter Sports Dance – to be determined

February 10

  • RHS FFA Meats Contest – canceled
  • RMS Wrestling – canceled
  • RHS Junior Varsity Basketball at Southeast of Saline – canceled
  • Forensics - canceled

February 11 and 12

  • Spring Play at RMS Auditorium rescheduled for February 17 at 7 PM and February 18 at 2 PM

USD 407 officials in conjunction with the County Health Nurse urge everyone to take extreme care in monitoring the health of your student or students.

There have been multiple confirmed cases of Influenza A, Influenza B, Mononucleosis and Strep Throat in the community.

If your child or children are experiencing any of the following symptoms, please seek medical attention as soon as possible:

  • A fever of 100.4 or higher
  • Persistent Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Chest Congestion

"The health, wellness and safety of our students and staff are of our utmost concern and priority," according to a statement on the USD 407 website. "USD 407 officials understand the seriousness of this issue in our community and throughout the region and are working diligently to do everything we possibly can in our buildings to maintain a safe, sanitary environment for our students and staff."

USD 407 urges everyone to please do your part in helping by taking the following measures at home:

  • Seek medical attention for your children when necessary
  • Keep students home who are not feeling well
  • Avoid crowds and events if at all possible
  • If you do have to be in large gatherings, the health office and physicians clinic have masks available
  • Wash coats, bedding, clothing, etc.
  • Wipe down books, book bags, door knobs, etc. with disinfectant wipes

USD 407 will continue to work closely with County Health Officials to monitor and work through this situation. After consultation with the County Health Nurse on Friday, a determination regarding school on Monday will be made.
