Russell City Council Approves Donation for VFW Mural

Russell City Council 1-2-18The Russell City Council voted Tuesday to donate $10,000 to Russell's Original Art Review (ROAR) to help fund the painting of a large veterans mural on the Russell VFW Building.

The mural is being painted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ROAR Show. The mural will cost approximately $36,000.

The donation was approved by a five to one vote. Councilman GJ Long cast the opposing vote. Long had previously expressed concern about the donation because of other budget cuts.

The donation will come from the Duke Johnson Trust Fund and will not involve taxpayer dollars.

Also Tuesday, the Council discussed the 2019 budget planning calendar, an update to the city's employee anti-drug and alcohol use policy, grants for fire equipment and trucks, and codification.

According to City Attorney Ken Cole, the codification process has been going on for a few years.

When the codification is complete and approved, the entire city code will be available online for the public to view.
