Sylvan-Lucas Shuts Out Wilson in Regular Season Finale

FootballWILSON-Wyatt Hiitter caught three touchdown passes and the Sylvan-Lucas defense held Wilson to 65 total yards as the Mutangs downed the Dragons 46-0 in 8 Man Division ll District 5 action Friday night.

After Wilson went three and out on its first possession, the Mustangs drove 73 yards in 10 plays and passed the ball just once.  That was on the last play when Quarterback Tyler Barrientes found a wide open Hiitter from eight yards out and Barrientes ran in the two-point play for an 8-0 lead.  The advantage grew to 16-0 when Freshman Dayton Couse rushed for a four-yard touchdown and then Barrientes connected with Hiitter again from 28 yards out for a 24-0 Sylvan-Lucas lead after the first quarter.

Wilson controlled time of possession for most of the second quarter and the Dragons were putting together a solid drive that navigated to the Mustang 23-yard line before Quarterback Westin Hughes fumbled a snap and Sylvan-Lucas recvoered.  From there the Mustangs marched 52 yards in seven plays and Hiitter scored his third touchdown on a halfback option pass from Beau Batchman and the two-point play swelled the Mustang lead to 32-0 at the half.

Sylvan-Lucas scored on their first possession of the second half when Batchman scampered 21 yards for a touchdown and the two-point play made the score 40-0.  After another Wilson turnover it appeared the Mustangs were primed to close out the game but a Kilby Meyer fumble gave the ball back to the Dragons.  After another three and out, Wilson appeared to pin Sylvan-Lucas deep in their own territory after a 47-yard punt by Brady Mermis gave the Mustangs the ball on their own 13-yard line.  However, Batchman turned the lights out on the game and the regular season with a 67-yard run ending the contest at the 6:23 mark of the third period.

Sylvan-Lucas even with their three touchdown passes, used the ground game as their main weapon by rolling up 274 yards ruhsing with 170 of those belonging to Batchman.  The Mustangs wound up with 308 yards in all.
