Mustangs Rout Wallace County, Victoria Survives Scare

FootballSHARON SPRINGS-Beau Batchman rushed for 229 yards and four touchdowns as the Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs crushed Sharon Springs-Wallace County 44-0 in the first round of the 8-Man Division ll Playoffs Thursday evening.

The Wildcats won the opening coin toss and drove to the Mustang 19-yard line before their drive stalled and the ball went over on downs.  It took just two plays for Sylvan-Lucas to get on the scoreboard when Batchman rumbled 52 yards for a touchdown.  The two-point try was no good leaving the score 6-0.  The Mustangs scored again just over two minutes later when Marshall Hurlbut scampered 43 yards for a score for a 12-0 lead after the missed two-point try.

In the second quarter, Wallace County drove all the way to the Sylvan-Lucas five-yard line and seemed poised to cut into the deficit when Quarterback Luke Johnson fumbled and Tra Barrientes recovered for the Mustangs.  Batchman then took off on a 65-yard run for a score and ran in the two-point conversion himself for a 20-0 halftime lead.

Batchman tallied two more touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of nine and 45 yards and then ran in both two-point conversions swelling the advantage to 36-0.  On Wallace County's next drive, Sylvan-Lucas' Wyatt Hiitter made a leaping grab for an interception in front of a Wildcat receiver allowing the Mustangs to set up shop on their own 34-yard line.  Four plays later, Hiitter broke open and hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Tyler Barrientes and Batchman ran in the two-point try to give the Mustangs a 44-0 lead after three quarters.  Neither team scored in the fourth quarter as the Sylvan-Lucas defense preserved the Mustangs' fifth shutout of the season and third in a row.

Led by Batchman's output, Sylvan-Lucas rolled up 401 yards rushing out of 429 yards of total offense while throwing the ball just twice all night long.  Wallace County (3-6) was held to just 180 yards of total offense.

Sylvan-Lucas (6-3) advances into the Regional round of the playoffs and will travel to district opponent Osborne on November 2.  The Bulldogs had little trouble in disposing of Triplains-Brewster Thursday night by a score of 48-0.

Meanwhile, Victoria (7-2) outlasted Leoti-Wichita County 34-28 in the first round of the 8-Man Division l Playoffs at home.  Wichita County twice held the lead during the second half but the Knights battled back with the help of a defensive score to set up a Regional showdown next Friday at St. Francis which blasted Stockton Thursday night 46-0.

The Wilson Dragons wrapped up their season Thursday afternoon in Grainfield and rolled past Wheatland-Grinnell 50-0.  With the victory, Wilson snapped a seven-game losing streak which occurred after the Dragons defeated Southern Cloud in their opening game of the season.  Wilson finishes with a record of 2-7.
