Russell Ends Season with Win Over Larned

Russell Bronco FootballThe Russell Bronco football team finished the 2018 season with a 48-20 victory over the Larned Indians on Friday, October 26 at Shaffer Field in Russell.

Russell (3-6) wide receiver Rhett Pospichal returned the game's opening kickoff for a touchdown. The Broncos extended their lead with 9:49 to play in the first quarter when quarterback Austin Price rushed 12 yards for a TD. However, at the 5:49 mark in the first period, Larned (0-9) running back Jacob Smith rushed 14 yards for a touchdown. Russell's Price finished a 10 play, 91 yard drive with a one yard TD run at the end of the first stanza and the Broncos led 21-7 after one frame.

Price passed six yards to wide receiver Travis Tammen with 6:02 to play in the second quarter for another touchdown. That score capped off a 12 play, 91 yard drive. Then with only 47 seconds to go in the first half, Price passed 26 yards to wide receiver Gavin Ewers for a TD. Russell led 34-7 at the break.

Neither team scored in the third period.

Bronco running back Glen Law finished off an 11 play, 64 yard drive with a four yard touchdown run with 8:14 to play in the game. Price then scored just a few seconds later on a one yard TD run after another Indian turnover. Larned scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes, but Russell's lead was too large and the Broncos came away with the win.

Bronco kicker Guilherme Vieira was 6-for-7 on extra point kicks.

The Broncos totaled 180 yards on the ground and 175 yards through the air. Price passed for 165 yards on 10 completions. The leading Russell receiver was Kyler Fritschen who caught five passes for 79 yards. Price also rushed for 138 yards on 10 carries.

Larned totaled 348 yards on the ground and 87 yards through the air. Jacob Smith rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries.

The Indians outgained Russell 435 yards to 355 yards, but Larned threw three interceptions and lost two fumbles. The Broncos lost two fumbles.

Russell finishes the season 3-6 overall. The Broncos were 0-5 in Class 3A District 8 and 1-2 in the North Central Activities Association.
