Mustangs Season Ends with Regional Loss at Osborne

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolOSBORNE-The Sylvan-Lucas Mustangs entered Friday's 8-Man Division ll Regional playoff game here on a three-game winning streak with shutouts in all three victories.

The Mustang Defense though figured to be tested by a high-octane Osborne offense which regularly scored 50 points or more in many of their games this season including a 60-point outburst in the first meeting between these two teams September 21 in Sylvan Grove.  While it was a close game at halftime, the Bulldogs running attack eventually became too much for Sylvan-Lucas to overcome as Osborne pulled away for a 66-20 victory, eliminating the Mustangs and ending their season.

Sylvan-Lucas started strong on its opening drive, moving the ball all the way to the Bulldog seven-yard line before a fumbled snap ended the Mustang threat.  Osborne jumped out to the lead on its second possession when Quarterback Darnell Holloway raced to the end zone on a 52-yard run then ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 advantage after the first quarter.

The Mustangs responded when Quarterback Tyler Barrientes scored from one yard out but Sylvan-Lucas still trailed 8-6 when Beau Batchman barely missed cracking the end zone on the two-point try.  The Bulldogs needed just three plays to widen their lead when Darrien Holloway hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from his brother Darnell and the two-point play was good to put Osborne up 16-6.

Sylvan-Lucas made it close again with 31 seconds left in the half on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Barrientes to Wyatt Hiitter on a fourth down play but the missed conversion left the score at 16-12.  Thanks to a kickoff that was fielded near midfield, the Bulldogs needed just 27 seconds to score again on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Holloway to Kade Miller.  The halftime score was 22-12 after the two-point conversion failed.

Osborne scored twice more in the opening minutes of the third quarter when Darnell Holloway scored on a three-yard run for his second score of the game and Freshman Mason Schurr scored from from five yards out to increase Osborne's lead to 36-12.  Sylvan-Lucas would score again before the third quarter was over as the Mustangs benefitted from three Osborne penalties: two personal fouls and a pass interference.  Batchman capped the drive with a three yard run and the conversion was good drawing Sylvan-Lucas to within 36-20.

After that it was all Darrien Holloway who scored touchdowns on runs of one, 46, 12 and seven yards, the last of which ended the game with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter when the Bulldogs crossed the 45-point lead threshold.

Third-ranked Osborne rolled up 508 yards of total offense.  Darrien Holloway ran for 192 yards while Darnell Holloway rushed for 155 yards and passed for 103 more.  The vaunted rushing attack for Sylvan-Lucas (6-4) was largely held in check as they put up numbers well below their season average with 202 yards of total offense.  Batchman who ran for 229 yards and four touchdowns in last week's win over Wallace County was held to just 77 yards on 31 carrries by the Bulldog Defense.

Osborne (9-1) will move into the Sectional round of the playoffs and host South Barber next Friday.  South Barber won their Regional contest over Stafford Friday evening.
