RHS Opens Season with Split at Minneapolis

The Russell High School girls basketball team opened the 2018-2019 season on Friday, November 30 at Minneapolis with a 49-33 win.

The Lady Broncos led 19-6 after the first quarter, 33-14 at halftime and 40-22 after three frames.

Russell's Tiffany Dortland scored 28 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds.

Karisma Vignery scored 20 points for Minneapolis.

The Lady Broncos out-rebounded Minneapolis 31 to 26.

Russell improves to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the NCAA.

In the boys game, the first half was tight, but the Lions pulled away in the second half for a 57-41 victory.

Minneapolis led 16-10 after the first period, but only 22-21 at halftime. Russell was able to tie the game at 33-33 in the third stanza, but the Lions pulled back ahead late in the third and held a 39-34 advantage going into the final quarter. The Broncos connected on only two field goals in the fourth period and Minneapolis pulled away.

Austin Price led Russell with 15 points and seven boards. Tyler Whipple followed with 10 points.

Spencer Davidson led Minneapolis with 17 points. Nolan White followed with 15 points and Kaden McCullick had 12.

The Broncos turned the ball over 19 times.

The Russell boys fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Russell hosts the Amos Morris Classic Basketball Tournament from December 3 through 8. The Russell girls open with Plainville on Monday, December 3 at 7:30 PM at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.
