Victoria Teams Fall to Hoxie in Opener

Victoria High SchoolVICTORIA-The Victoria Boys and Girls Basketball teams opened their 2018-19 seasons Friday night with a home doubleheader against Hoxie.

The Victoria Girls jumped out to an early seven-point lead and held another seven-point advantage in the second half before a cold spell allowed Hoxie to rally for a 47-45 victory while the Victoria Boys fell behind early and never could catch up in a 67-35 loss to the Indians.

In the girls game, Hoxie scored the game's first three points before the Lady Knights went on a 10-0 run to lead 10-3.  Hoxie fought back and held an 18-16 advantage early in the second quarter before the lead changed hands several times.  The Lady Knights then went on a run to end the half in dramatic fashion when Emily Sterling scored at the buzzer on a shot from beyond half court to lift Victoria to a 33-26 lead.

The Lady Knights led 37-31 midway through the third quarter when they went ice cold from the floor and Hoxie surged into the lead with the help of a 14-0 run.  Hoxie's lead grew to as much as 45-37 before Victoria mounted a furious comeback in the game's final minutes including a basket that cut the deficit to two points with just seven tenths of a second remaining.  Hoxie then inbounded the ball and ran out the clock to preserve the victory.

Lydia Sander led Victoria with 16 point while Ally Dinkel added 15 but all of those points came in the first half.  Macy Schamberger and Addi Campbell paced Hoxie with 12 points apiece.

In the boys contest, the Indians jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and never looked back.  Hoxie utilized its height advantage to score easy baskets and employed an aggressive press to force numerous Victoria turnovers.  With Hoxie's lead at 33 points, the fourth quarter of the game was played with a running clock.

Nick Dreiling led Victoria with 14 points which included a trio of three-pointers.  Three Indians were in double figures including Jarrod Dible who led all scorers with 17 points whle Harlan Obioha and Jake Geisinger contributed 10 apiece.

Victoria will next be in action at the Purple and Gold Tournament in WaKeeney which begins Monday.  Both teams will face Northern Valley in their first games of the tourney.
