Plainville Girls Defeat Russell in AMC Opening Night

Russell Bronco BasketballThe Russell High School girls basketball team opened the Amos Morris Classic tournament with a loss for the first time since 2013. The Lady Broncos fell 58-38 to Plainville on Monday, December 3 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

Russell led 11-8 after one period and 21-18 at the break. The Lady Cardinals outscored Russell 16 to 8 in the third quarter and led 34-29 after three periods. Plainville hit free throws down the stretch to solidify the win.

Megan Peeler led Russell with a career-high 13 points and eight rebounds. Tiffany Dortland followed with 11 points.

Aubree Dewey led Plainville with 26 points. Kate McClellan followed with 17 points and 11 boards. Halli Friend scored 10 points.

Plainville out-rebounded Russell 36 to 25 and 15 to 10 on the offensive glass.

Russell was 3-of-8 from the free throw line, while Plainville was 13-of-22.

The Lady Broncos fall to 1-1 overall.

The Russell girls will host Ellsworth on Thursday, December 6 at 4 PM at Amos Morris Gym. The Lady Bearcats lost 51-28 to Smith Center on Monday. The Smith Center girls will play Central Plains on Thursday at 5:45 PM. The Lady Oilers defeated Phillipsburg 73-19 on Monday. The Plainville girls will face Phillipsburg on Thursday at 7:30 PM.
