Russell Girls Win, Boys Fall Short Against Sacred Heart

The Russell High School girls basketball team notched a 49-35 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday, December 11 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

The Lady Broncos trailed 13-12 after the first period, but outscored the Lady Knights 11 to 4 in the second quarter and held a 23-17 lead at halftime. Russell extended its lead in the third stanza and led 37-23 heading into the final frame. Each team scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and Russell came away with the victory.

Russell's Tiffany Dortland scored 20 points and Emerson Nichols followed with a career-high 13 points.

Ally Cochran scored 10 points for Sacred Heart.

Russell improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the NCAA.

In the boys game, Russell jumped out to a big lead early, fell behind and then came back, but ultimately lost 50-44.

The Broncos led 18-10 after one quarter largely because of four three-pointers, but Sacred Heart outscored Russell 13 to 3 in the second period and the Knights held a 23-21 lead at the break after trailing all but 45 seconds of the first half. Sacred Heart extended its lead in the third to 40-31. However, in the fourth quarter Russell got as close as 45-44 after a Jacob Sohm dunk and, a couple possessions later, four made free throws after a technical foul and ejection of a Sacred Heart player, but the Knights would go on to hit free throws down the stretch and escape with the win.

Tyler Whipple led Russell with 14 points. Austin Price followed with 11 points.

Trace Leners and Tate Herrenbruck each scored 12 points for Sacred Heart.

The Russell boys fall to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the league.
