RHS Sweeps Republic County

The Russell High School girls basketball team scored a hard-fought 49-43 win at Republic County in Belleville on Friday, December 14.

The Lady Broncos led 14-12 after the first quarter and 23-22 at the half. Russell stretched its lead to 36-29 after three periods and hit free throws and a couple three-pointers in the final frame to come away with the victory.

Russell's Tiffany Dortland led with 24 points and six three-pointers. Emerson Nichols followed with 10 points. Nichols was the only Lady Bronco to attempt free throws. She was 6-of-10 from the foul line.

Alexis Hansen led the Lady Buffs with 23 points. Emma Morris followed with 11 points.

Russell improves to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the NCAA.

In the boys game, the first half was tight, Russell pulled away in the third quarter and Republic County stormed back, but the Broncos hit timely shots and free throws in the fourth stanza to grab the 69-60 win.

The Broncos led 15-13 after one quarter and 36-29 at halftime. Russell extended its advantage to as much as 18 points in the third period before the Buffaloes pulled back to within 10 at the end of the quarter. The Broncos led 51-41 heading into the fourth. After going only 1-of-7 from the free throw line in the first three quarters, Russell hit 8-of-11 charity shots in the final period and held on for the victory.

Tyler Whipple led Russell with 20 points. Austin Price followed with 16 points. Rhett Pospichal scored a career-high 10 points.

Ethan Nutsch paced Republic County with 23 points. Clint Callaway followed with 12 points.

The Russell boys improve to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.

The Russell girls and boys continue league play on Tuesday, December 18 against Ellsworth at Amos Morris Gym in Russell. The girls game will tip off at 6 PM with the boys game to follow. Catch both games on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
