Russell Splits Final Games Before Holiday Break

Russell Bronco BasketballGirls: Russell 40, Ellsworth 31
Boys: Ellsworth 50, Russell 47

The Russell High School boys and girls basketball teams played their final games before the Holiday Break on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at home against NCAA league foe Ellsworth at Amos Morris Gym.

The Lady Broncos stayed undefeated in league play with a 40-31 victory, while the Broncos missed a last second shot and fell 50-47.

In the girls game, Russell jumped out to an 18-8 lead at halftime and led 23-14 late in the third quarter before going on a 14-4 run to go up 37-18 midway through the fourth. Ellsworth closed the gap to nine, but could not get closer as the Lady Broncos beat Ellsworth for the second time this season and earned their third-straight victory.

Tiffany Dortland scored 19 points for Russell and was the only player to reach double-figures for either team.

The Lady Broncos improve to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the North Central Activities Association.

Ellsworth led much of the way in the boys contest. The Bearcats took a 16-6 advantage after one quarter and went up 26-18 at the half. Russell cut the deficit to 38-37 at the end of the third quarter and went in front 41-40 with 5:30 remaining. Ellsworth went ahead 48-44 in the final seconds of the game. Jacob Sohm got a traditional three-point play to make it 48-47. After a pair of Bearcat free throws, Russell had one last shot to tie the game and send it to overtime, but a three by Austin Price at the horn just missed.

Sohm scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Broncos. Price hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Ellsworth outscored Russell from the foul line 15-4 in the game.

The Broncos fall to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Russell is now off until Jan. 4 when they host Beloit.
