Third-Ranked Sylvan-Lucas Routs Natoma, Improves to 8-0

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolBoys: Sylvan-Lucas 57, Natoma 32

NATOMA-J.C. Huehl scored 17 points to lead three Sylvan-Lucas players in double figures as the Mustangs overcame a sluggish first half and a rough night at the free throw line to pull away for a 57-32 win over Natoma Tuesday evening at Tiger Gymnasium.

Tyler Barrientes opened the scoring for the Mustangs, ranked third in this week's Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A poll with a pair of three-pointers as Sylvan-Lucas raced out to an early 13-2 lead.  Natoma was able to get untracked through and closed to within 16-10 after the first quarter.  The second quarter featured runs by both teams with Sylvan-Lucas scoring eight straight points to lead 24-10 before the Tigers scored the last nine points of the half to pull within 24-19 at intermission.

After Natoma sank a free throw to trail 24-20 early in the third quarter, Huehl got untracked scoring nine points in the period to help the Mustangs lead 42-24 after three quarters and they were never threatened after that.  Huehl's younger brother Jonah Huehl scored 15 points while Barrientes finished the night with 12 points off four three-pointers.  Jayson Engling was Natoma's leading scorer with 11 points.

Sylvan-Lucas (8-0, 4-0) won easily despite a miserable night at the charity stripe as they made just three of 16 free throw attempts for a paltry 19 percent.  Natoma (2-6, 0-4) fared somewhat better converting eight of 13 attempts for 62 percent,

Both teams have one more game before next week's Northern Plains League mid-season tournament in Lincoln.  Sylvan-Lucas will play a doubleheader Friday at Lakeside while the Natoma Boys will be home against Southern Cloud.
