RHS Splits at Southeast of Saline

The Russell High School girls basketball team had four players score in double figures and won 51-48 at Southeast of Saline on Tuesday, January 8.

The Lady Broncos trailed 14-13 after the first quarter, but jumped ahead to a 30-24 lead at halftime. The score remained close in the third period and Russell led 42-38 after three frames. The Lady Broncos hit free throws down the stretch to escape with the victory.

Tiffany Dortland led Russell with 13 points. Ryleigh Wagner, Emerson Nichols and Aniya Braster each scored 10 points. Braster also recorded 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Karsyn Schlesener led SES with 14 points. Molly Chitty followed with 10 points and 10 boards. Keely Orr also had 11 rebounds.

The Lady Broncos were 10-of-20 from the free throw line, while the Lady Trojans were 3-of-16.

Russell improves to 6-3 overall and 5-1 in the NCAA.

In the boys game, Russell had a tough night shooting from the field and lost 59-50.

The Broncos trailed 12-4 after one stanza and 27-15 at the half. Russell made only two field goals in the first half. However, the Broncos outscored the Trojans 18-10 in the third quarter and even claimed the lead a couple times before ending the third period down 37-33. Southeast of Saline's Jaxson Gebhardt scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter and helped the Trojans pull away for the win.

Austin Price led Russell with 20 points.

Nick Montgomery also added 10 points for the Trojans.

The Broncos shot 18-of-23 from the foul line, while the Trojans were 15-of-23.

The Russell boys fall to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.

The Russell girls and boys are off on Friday and will next be in action on Tuesday, January 15 when they begin play in the Hoisington Winter Jam at the Hoisington Activities Center. The girls will play Victoria on Tuesday at 6:30 PM and the boys will play LaCrosse at 8:15 PM. Catch both games on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
