RHS Sweeps the Buffs

The Russell High School girls basketball team earned its tenth win of the season on Friday, February 1 with a 31-26 victory over Republic County at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

The Lady Broncos and Lady Buffs were tied at 6-6 after the first period and Republic County pulled ahead 13-11 at the half. However, Russell outscored Republic County 13-5 in the third quarter and jumped ahead 24-18 heading into the final frame. The Lady Broncos hit only one field goal in the fourth stanza, but held on for the win.

Tiffany Dortland led Russell with 20 points and five three-pointers.

Alexis Hansen led the Lady Buffs with 11 points.

The Russell girls improve to 10-4 overall and 7-1 in the NCAA, which leads the league.

The Russell boys also picked up a league win on Friday as they defeated Republic County 62-55.

The Broncos held a 14-8 advantage after the first quarter and a 28-16 lead at halftime. The Buffaloes pulled to within two points in the third frame and Russell led 41-39 after three quarters. The Broncos hit free throws and three-pointers down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

Austin Price led Russell with 21 points. Rhett Pospichal followed with 13 points.

Zach Parde led Republic County with 15 points, Tate Lapo scored 13 points and Blake Aurand finished with 11 points.

The Broncos improve to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in the league.

Also Friday, Tyler Whipple and Mackenzie Thomas were crowned Winter Sports King and Queen (pictured).
