The Russell High School girls basketball team stepped out of league play on Monday, February 4 and defeated Ellinwood 60-47 at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

Free throw shooting was key early on as the Lady Broncos shot 15 free throws and made 11 of them in the first quarter to hold a 20-11 lead after one period. The Russell girls led 36-23 at halftime, but allowed the Lady Eagles to claw back to within six points at the end of the third frame. Russell led 46-40 heading into the final stanza. The Lady Broncos shot 4-of-5 from the foul line and hit a pair of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Tiffany Dortland led Russell with a career-high 39 points and five three-pointers. Janae Schulte followed with 12 points.

Madison Ward led Ellinwood with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Mya Maxwell followed with 14 points.

The Lady Broncos finished 18-of-26 from the charity stripe, but were out-rebounded 31 to 18 overall and 20 to 9 on the offensive glass.

The Russell girls improve to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the NCAA, which leads the league.

The Russell boys won their third game in a row with a 52-40 victory over Ellinwood.

The Broncos jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one period and led 22-15 at the break. The Eagles wouldn't go away and Russell led 34-28 after three quarters. The Broncos pulled away in the final frame by shooting 100 percent from the free throw line, as Austin Price hit six foul shots and Tyler Whipple hit a pair.

Whipple led Russell with 21 points and five three-pointers. Price followed with 13 points. Jacob Sohm finished with eight points, seven boards and eight blocks.

David Hammeke led the Eagles with 15 points. Brandon Carr scored 10 points.

Both teams were 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

The Broncos improve to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in the league. Seven wins in a season is the most the Russell boys have had in nine years.
