Russell Girls Clinch At Least a Share of League Title, Boys Fall

The Russell High School girls basketball team defeated Beloit 54-46 on Friday, February 8 at Beloit to clinch at least a share of the NCAA league title.

The Lady Trojans held a 9-5 lead after one quarter and a 20-17 lead at the half. The Lady Broncos claimed their first lead of the game with about 3:30 to play in the third period and began the final stanza leading 38-35. Russell's Tiffany Dortland scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and the Lady Broncos held on for the win.

Dortland led Russell with 32 points and 14 rebounds. She also hit a farther-than-half-court-shot to end the first half.

For Beloit, Sydney Barrett scored 17 points, Breezy Schroeder had 12 points and Shea Larson finished with 11 points.

The Russell girls improve to 13-4 overall and 9-1 in the NCAA, which leads the league with only two more league games to play.

The Russell boys fought hard and had a state-ranked Beloit team on the ropes in the fourth quarter, but ultimately, the Trojans won 47-41.

Beloit dominated the first period and led 16-3 after one quarter. However, Russell hit five three-pointers in the second quarter and trailed 30-20 at halftime. The Broncos cut it to a 37-33 Beloit lead after three frames and even cut it to a 37-36 Trojan advantage in the fourth quarter, but Russell never claimed the lead and Beloit escaped with the victory. 

Ceaonte Walston led Russell with 10 points. Glen Law finished with 11 boards.

For Beloit, Vincent Palen scored 12 points and Carson Cox followed with 10 points.

The Russell boys out-rebounded Beloit 32 to 24 overall and 13 to 5 on the offensive glass.

The Broncos fall to 7-10 overall and 3-7 in the league.
