RHS Ends Regular Season with Split

The Russell High School girls basketball team closed out the 2018-19 regular season on Monday, February 18 with a 49-31 win over Minneapolis at Amos Morris Gym in Russell.

The Lady Broncos actually trailed 7-4 after the first quarter, but outscored the Lady Lions 16-5 in the second period and Russell held a 20-12 lead at the half. Russell extended its lead to 39-25 after the third stanza and pulled away in the final frame.

Tiffany Dortland paced Russell with 23 points. Camille Dortland followed with 12 points. Aniya Braster finished with nine rebounds.

Karisma Vignery led Minneapolis with 14 points. Zoie Shupe had 11 boards.

The Lady Lions out-rebounded Russell 36 to 32 overall and 20 to 7 on the offensive glass.

The Russell girls improve to 16-4 overall and 11-1 in the NCAA. The Lady Broncos have won nine straight.

The Russell boys lost 67-46 to Minneapolis on Monday.

The Lions led 17-8 after one period, 30-21 at halftime and 47-37 after three quarters. Minneapolis pulled away in the fourth period.

Tyler Whipple led Russell with 12 points. Jacob Sohm followed with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Jonah Ausherman paced Minneapolis with 17 points. Kaden McCullick scored 16 points, Trent Moeckel had 13 points and Spencer Davidson finished with 10 points.

The Lions out-rebounded Russell 31 to 23 overall and 15 to 5 on the offensive glass.

The Broncos fall to 7-13 overall and 3-9 in the league.

The Russell girls and boys begin Sub-State next week. The Lady Broncos will host a home game on Monday, February 25 and the Russell boys will travel on Tuesday, February 26. Check KRSL.com later this week for the brackets.
