Sylvan-Lucas Boys Advance, Victoria Eliminated

SYLVAN GROVE-Brett Liebl scored 21 points and Devin Ryan added 18 as the Central Plains Oilers ended Victoria's season with a 63-18 victory over the Knights Friday evening in the semifinals of the Class 1A Boys Regional at Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School.

The defending state champion Oilers took control of the game early, scoring the first 10 points before Caden Oberle put Victoria on the scoreboard with a field goal.  Central Plains led 16-2 afte the first eight minutes and extended their lead while the Knights struggled to generate any offense as the score was 32-3 at halftime.  From there, Central Plains cruised to its 47th straight victory and advanced to the Regional Championship game.

Joining Liebl and Ryan in double figures for Central Plains was Lawson Oeser with 11 points.  Cooper Windholz led Victoria with seven points.  Windholz, Oberle, Walker Braun, Tyler Knoles and Jacob Wellbrock closed out their high school basketball careers in Friday's game.  Victoria finishes the season with a record of 7-14 while Central Plains improves to 21-0.

The second game of the night featured the third meeting this season between arch-rivals Sylvan-Lucas and Wilson and for the third time the Mustangs prevailed 50-43.

The lead changed hands several times during the first quarter with Sylvan-Lucas in front 14-12 after the first eight minutes.  The second quarter belonged to Wilson as they started the period on a 10-5 surge to grab their largest lead at 24-19.  Sylvan-Lucas though closed the gap to 24-22 at halftime and opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run to seize the lead.  Sylvan Lucas outscoed the Dragons 17-4 in the third quarter and led 39-28.  

The Mustangs led 42-30 early in the fourth quarter before Wilson used an 8-0 burst to slice the deficit down to four points at 42-38 before Sylvan-Lucas iced the game by making seven of 11 free throw attempts down the stretch aided by a key three-point play by Jonah Huehl.

Huehl and Beau Batchman led Sylvan-Lucas with 16 points apiece while three Dragons scored in double figures.  Tristan Soukup and Brady Mermis put up 13 points apiece while Ethan Dlabl contributed 10 points.  For Dlabl, Soukup, Mermis, Mason Prester and Kory Kriley it was their final Basketball game in a Wilson uniform.

The Dragons finish the season with a record of 12-9 while Sylvan-Lucas improves their mark to 15-4.

Because of the incoming Winter Storm slated to hit the region on Saturday, the Championship games in the Sylvan-Lucas Regional have been rescheduled for Sunday.  The Girls Championship between Central Plains and Otis-Bison will start at 4 p.m. with the Boys title game between Central Plains and Sylvan-Lucas slated to tip at 5:30 p.m.
