Russell Boys End Season at Hoisington

Russell Bronco BasketballThe Russell High School boys basketball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday, February 26 in Hoisington at the Activities Center with a 61-43 loss to the host Cardinals in the first round of sub-state.

Hoisington led 11-6 after the first period and 30-14 at the half. The Broncos outscored the Cards 15-7 in the third quarter and Hoisington led 37-29 after three frames. However, the Cardinals extended their lead in the final stanza and pulled away for the win.

Tyler Whipple was the only Bronco in double figures with 11 points.

Mason Haxton led Hoisington with 21 points and Drew Nicholson followed with 19 points.

RHS committed 17 turnovers compared to Hoisington's 10.

Both teams shot well from the free throw line. Russell was 12-of-15 and Hoisington was 13-of-16.

The Broncos finish the season 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the NCAA. Seven wins in a season is the most the Russell boys have had in nine years.
