Russell Girls Defeat TMP, Advance to Sub-State Championship

Russell Bronco BasketballThe Russell High School girls basketball team will play for a sub-state championship for the third consecutive year as they defeated TMP-Marian 51-48 on Thursday, February 28 in the semifinals of the Hoisington 3A Sub-State at the Hoisington Activities Center.

The Lady Monarchs led 14-9 after one quarter, but the Lady Broncos outscored TMP 10-4 in the second period and Russell held a 19-18 lead at the half. TMP led 31-30 after three frames. The teams traded baskets in the fourth stanza and Russell held on for the win.

Tiffany Dortland paced Russell with 25 points, 20 of which were in the second half. Camille Dortland scored a career-high 13 points.

Jillian Lowe led TMP with 17 points. Emilee Lane followed with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

RHS forced 19 Lady Monarch turnovers while only turning the ball over 10 times.

The Russell girls improve to 18-4 overall. The Lady Broncos have won 11 straight.

The Russell girls advance to the Hoisington 3A Sub-State Championship on Saturday, March 2. The Lady Broncos will face top-seeded Norton in Hoisington at the Activities Center at 2 PM. The game has been moved up due to impending winter weather. The Norton girls defeated Southeast of Saline 55-23 on Thursday in Hoisington. Catch Saturday's game on KRSL AM 990, 98.1 FM and KRSL.com.
