Sylvan-Lucas Falls to Northern Valley in Sub-State Semis

Sylvan-Lucas High SchoolNorthern Valley 63, Sylvan-Lucas 39

GREAT BEND-Riley Sides and Alex Van Patten scored 11 points each as the Northern Valley Huskies pulled away from Sylvan-Lucas in the second half for a 63-39 victory in the semifinals of the Class 1A Russell sub-state tournament Friday evening at Barton Community College.

A boiler issue at Russell High School which forced the cancellation of classes on Thursday and Friday made the venue change to Great Bend necessary.

The first quarter was the game's most competitive.  After Sylvan-Lucas scored the first bucket of the night, the Huskies reeled off the next seven points but the Mustangs kept the score close and trailed only 14-11 after the first eight minutes.

Northern Valley used tough defense to convert turnovers into points during the second period and stretched their lead out to 29-17 at halftime.  In the third quarter, the Huskies knocked down four three-point baskets and blew the game wide open while outscoring Sylvan-Lucas 20-12 to lead 69-49.  The closest the Mustangs would get was 18 points before Northern Valley punched their ticket to the Sub-State Final.  The Huskies (21-2) will meet Osborne (22-0) with a trip to the Class 1A state tournament at stake.  The Bulldogs shook off a sluggish first half en route to a 66-48 win over Quinter later Friday night.

Joining Sides and Van Patten in double figures for Northern Valley was Fabian Loya who tallied 10 points.  Jonah Huehl led Sylvan-Lucas with 11 points while Beau Batchman added 10.

Friday's game was the last in a Mustang uniform for seniors J.C. Huehl, Tyler Barrientes and Wyatt Hiiter.

Sylvan-Lucas concludes the 2018-19 season with a record of 15-6.
