Lady Broncos Comeback Falls Short in Sub-State Championship

Russell Bronco BasketballThe Russell High School girls basketball team's season came to an end on Saturday, March 2 in the championship game of the Hoisington 3A Sub-State at the Hoisington Activities Center. Top-seeded Norton defeated the Lady Broncos 51-49.

The Lady Bluejays hit eight free throws in the first quarter and jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one period. Norton stretched its lead to as much as 14 points in the second stanza, but Russell trailed only 29-23 at the half. The lead was 44-36 for Norton after three frames. Russell roared back in the fourth quarter and claimed its first lead of the contest with just under four minutes to play. The RHS girls led 49-47 at that point. Unfortunately, the three-pointer by Camille Dortland that gave Russell the lead was the last bucket for the Lady Broncos. Norton tied the contest just a few seconds later and hit the game winner with just 12 seconds left.

Tiffany Dortland paced Russell with 22 points. Camille Dortland followed with 12 points.

Tessa Hauser led Norton with 22 points, Taryn Kuhn scored 16 points, including the game winner, and Hadley Hauser finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The rebounding battle was even with both teams totaling 25 boards.

The Russell girls end the season with an 18-5 overall record. The Lady Broncos also won the North Central Activities Association league title with an 11-1 record.
