Bronco Baseball Falls Twice to SE Saline

Baseball-Glove PicGame 1: SE-Saline 2, Russell-Victoria 1
Game 2: SE-Saline 12, Russell-Victoria 4

The Russell-Victoria baseball team took on Southeast of Saline in their final North Central Activities Association doubleheader of the season on Thursday at Shaffer Field in Russell.  Southeast of Saline took a close pitcher's duel 2-1 in Game 1 and won the nightcap 12-4.

In the first game, Russell-Victoria's Brendan Buhrle matched up with Southeast's Eli Harris and they both put on a pitching clinic.  The Trojans jumped ahead with a two-run third inning on back to back RBI singles.  The Broncos were held hitless until Rhett Pospichal reached base on a two-out bloop single in the bottom of the third.

The Broncos plated their only run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Brayden Ford that brought home Cooper Windholz who had singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch.  The rally then came to an abrupt end when Tyler Whipple flew out to right and Ford was doubled off first base by Southeast right fielder Jayton Mathis.  From there, Harris retired the final six Bronco hitters in order and the Trojans picked up the victory with Burhle (2-1) taking the loss despite a complete game.

In Game 2, the Trojans took advantage of numerous walks, wild pitches and hit batsmen to buiild up a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half.  The Broncos got on the board in the bottom of the second on Whipple's RBI single but Southeast then built the lead up to 9-1 over the next four innings.  Russell-Victoria drew closer in the bottom of the sixth when Kirk Huser crushed his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field.  Southeast however got the three runs back in the top of the seventh to finish their third consecutive sweep over the Broncos.  Starting pitcher Walker Braun (0-2) took the loss.

Russell-Victoria is now 8-8 on the season and finishes league play with a 4-4 record.  The Broncos will wrap up the regular season on Monday, May 6 when they host a twinbill against Colby on Senior Day at Shaffer Field.  First pitch for Game 1 is set for 4 p.m. and the Senior Day ceremony will be held between games.
