Lady Broncos Earn Split with Colby

Softball 2Game 1: Colby 7, Russell 1
Game 2: Russell 18, Colby 16

The Russell Lady Broncos Softball team closed out the 2019 regular season Monday afternoon at Memorial Park by splitting a doubleheader with Colby.  The Lady Eagles took Game 1 7-1 before Russell won a wild nightcap 18-16.

With the threat of inclement weather, the start of the twinbill was moved up one hour and in Game 1 Colby took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before a five-run rally in the second swelled the lead to 6-0 after an inning and a half.  The Lady Broncos scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning on Darian Klee's RBI single that scored Taylor Powers who had walked and stolen second base. Colby closed out the scoring with a run in the sixth inning and Kamrie Miller pitched a complete game four-hitter while Rylee Miller (2-6) went the distance for Russell.

The second game was a thriller that went down to the final out.  After Colby plated two runs in the top of the first inning, Russell scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI double by Rylee Miller, a sacrifice fly by Powers, an RBI triple by Kaitlynn Nichols and an RBI single by Kayla Noller.  Colby tied the score 4-4 in the top of the second but the Lady Broncos brought four more runs home in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double by Powers who later stole home and an RBI groundout by Klee to lead 8-4.

After Colby cut the lead to 8-5 in the top of the fourth, the Lady Broncos scored three more times in the bottom of the fourth on Klee's inside the park home run, Shelby Ney's RBI single and a wild pitch.  The 11-5 lead seemed safe but the Lady Eagles stormed back to tie the score 11-11 with a six-run rally in the top of the fifth.  Russell took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run double by Klee who ended up driving in five total runs in the doubleheader.  Colby re-tied the game in the top of the sixth at 13-13 with two more runs of their own.

In the bottom of the sixth, the score was still tied with two outs before Powers untied the game with an RBI single.  After Klee was intentionally walked to load the bases, Nichols slapped an opposite field single to right field to score two more runs and a third run scored on a throwing error to make the score 17-13 Lady Broncos.  Noller followed with another run-scoring single to make the score 18-13 heading to the top of the seventh.

Colby however would not go away as they came back with three runs in the top of the seventh before Miller struck out Kamrie Miller who was the tying run at the plate to end the game and the Lady Bronco's five-game losing streak.  Miller (3-6) picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Kendra Bay who registered 10 strikeouts and battled out of several jams including striking out the side with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Monday was also Senior Day and four Seniors were honored between games of the doubleheader. They were Ney, Skylar Steinle, Tandy Coleman and Lauren Myers.

Russell finishes the regular season with a record of 6-12, the same exact regular season mark they had in 2018.  The Lady Broncos will begin Regional play next week with the opponent and date to be announced later this week.
