Lady Broncos Season Ends with Regional Loss

SoftballHOISINGTON-The 2019 season came to an end Monday evening for the Russell Lady Broncos Softball team as they fell to Hoisington-Central Plains 10-0 in a game that ended due to the run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning in the first round of the TMP-Marian Regional of the Class 3A Tournament at Logan Field.

Number seven seed Russell fell into an early hole that was simply too deep to climb out of.

In the top of the first inning, Kendra Bay reached base on a two-out bloop single but was left stranded on base when Taylor Powers struck out to end the frame.  The second seeded Lady Cardinals then plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning against Bay (3-8) with the last three runs scoring with two out.  Dorian Klee led off the second inning with a single and stole second but she was picked off trying to steal third base to end the inning.  It wasn't known then but Klee would be the Lady Bronco's last baserunner of the game.

Hoisington-Central Plains added three more runs in the bottom of the third and closed the game with a run in the sixth to put the 10-run rule in effect.  Meanwhile, Taylor Boxberger was outstanding in the pitcher's circle for the Lady Cards.  She retired the last 15 Lady Bronco hitters she faced, ending up with nine strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Hoisington-Central Plains (16-3) advances to the semifinals where they will face #3 seed TMP-Marian at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon in Hays.  The Lady Monarchs edged sixth seeded Plainville-Stockton 6-5 in their first round game at home on Monday. The winner advances to the Championship game at 6 p.m. for a berth in the Class 3A State Tournament.

Russell ends the season with a record of 6-13, the same final mark they had in 2018.
