Broncos Season Ends with Loss to Augusta

Russell Bronco BaseballWICHITA-The Russell-Victoria Baseball team's postseason was a short one this year after Wednesday's 8-2 loss to Augusta in the Class 4A Regional Semfinals at Trinity Academy.

The Broncos took the early lead in the top of the first inning when Kyler Fritschen reached on a throwing error by Orioles shortstop Jaren Jackson.  After he was awarded second base on the play, Fritschen stole third and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Cooper Windholz for a 1-0 Russell-Victoria lead.

Augusta responded in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs off Brendan Buhrle on an RBI single by Gavin Payne and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Kohls.  An RBI groundout by Jett Hand in the bottom of the second inning widened the Oriole lead to 3-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Broncos pulled to within 3-2 when Tyler Whipple led off with a single and then advanced to third base when Augusta pitcher Xander Roberts threw the ball away on a pickoff attempt.  Roberts then uncorked a wild pitch allowing Whipple to score.  It appeared that there would be more to the rally, but Fritschen was thrown out trying to steal second base to end the inning.

Augusta got the run back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single and then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory.  In the top of the seventh, Caden Oberle struck out but reached base on a wild pitch, however Roberts retired the next three batters to end the contest and send Augusta to the Regional title game.

Trinity Academy the host school which defeated Rose Hill earlier Wednesday 3-0 rallied to edge Augusta 4-3 to win the Regional Championship and advance to next week's Class 4A State Tournament in Salina.

Russell-Victoria's season comes to a close with a final record of 10-11.
