State Track Recap: Russell's Nichol Wins 3A Long Jump Title

Russells Renee Nichol at State Meet 5-25-1913 area athletes competed in 16 events at the Kansas High School State Track and Field Meet at Cessna Stadium in Wichita on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 24-26.

The meet was originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, but rain and thunderstorms each day forced some events to be moved to Sunday.

Russell's Renee Nichol capped off an outstanding sophomore season with two medals. Nichol won the Class 3A long jump title (17'6") and placed third in the triple jump (35'10.5"). Jesse Whitmer was 14th in the 100 M dash (11.57).

In 1A, Jonathan Huehl from Sylvan-Lucas took sixth in the 1600 M run (4:39.94) and was ninth in the 800 M run (2:03.63). Beau Batchman finished 10th in the 300 M hurdles (42.78). Lexi Neel placed 14th in the 300 M hurdles (51.87).

Natoma's Ashton Lund was eighth in the 3200 M run (13:08.95). Carley Chrisler finished 12th in the 100 M dash (13.24) and 13th in the 200 M dash (27.45).

Wilson's Macy Hanzlick took ninth in the 200 M dash (27.16). Kaleigh Hanzlick was 10th in the high jump (4'10") and 14th in the prelims of the 100 M hurdles (17.12), but did not qualify for the finals.

Victoria's Melany Huser placed 13th in the 800 M run (2:35.10). Kaitlyn Windholz was 14th in the long jump (15'2.25"). The girls 4x800 relay team finished 11th (11:00.60).

The Russell girls ended up 16th with 16 points. Seneca-Nemaha Central won the 3A girls team title with 72 points. Kiowa County captured the 1A girls title with 69 points. Lincoln was second with 59. Natoma was 52nd with one point. Northern Valley won the 1A boys championship with 55.5 points. Sylvan-Lucas was 48th with three points.
